Liskeard School and Community College Take on the IET Faraday Challenge
In a thrilling event that took place on Wednesday 15th November, 35 year 8 students showcased their engineering prowess as they participated in the IET Faraday® Challenge Day. This engaging day of innovation, problem-solving, and hands-on engineering exploration provided a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of engineering.
Organised by regional delivery partners throughout the UK, the IET Faraday® Challenge Days brought together six teams of year 8 students. These young minds were tasked with delving into real engineering problems, engaging in research, design, and the construction of solutions to the challenges at hand.
The challenge, conducted in collaboration with The Rees Jeffreys Road Fund and National Highways, was shrouded in secrecy to ensure a fair competition, preventing any unfair advantage through pre-event preparation. Teams found themselves racing against the clock, applying their knowledge and skills to solve a real-life engineering problem in a competitive yet collaborative environment. A Royal Navy Engineer joined the day's proceedings, providing real-world STEM industry knowledge and support.
With an increasing demand for new engineers and technicians, the IET Faraday Challenge aims to broaden young minds and challenge their perceptions of engineering. By offering a glimpse into the life of a real engineer, the program aims to highlight the excitement and creativity inherent in the field.
The events were strategically designed to encourage more young people to explore and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills, participants not only competed but also gained valuable insights that may shape their future career paths.
The winning team from the event secured a coveted spot on the season’s league table. Top teams from across the UK earn an all-expenses-paid trip to the national final in June 2024, vying for a substantial cash prize of up to £1,000 for their school.
The IET Faraday® Challenge Days formed an integral part of a broader education program, offering a variety of teaching resources and activities. These initiatives were designed to inspire and attract the engineers of tomorrow, fostering an early interest in STEM subjects and careers.
